Portrait of a Governess

Curiosity
The uniform she is wearing identifies her as a governess: the severe black dress and the peculiar cap as already prescribed at the time of Countess Ludovica Torelli.

Colour ranges
The picture is dominated by shades of black, red and white. The white collar immediately attracts the eye and seems to radiate light on the face and veil. The black robe instead blends with a dark background. In the lower right corner the hands and the prayer book are highlighted thanks to the strong chromatic contrast. The soft colour on the edge of the oval defines and limits the space.

Analysis of light
The light comes from the top left corner and all the non-relevant elements are in the shade. The masterly use of the light focusing on her face and hands emphasises the inner strength of the governess.

Study of the composition
The setting is bare, characterised by the simple presence of a red drape behind the woman and a fake painted oculus that frames the figure, so as to draw the viewer’s attention on her as the true focus of the work. The central symmetry gives a solid balance to the protagonist.
