Saint Charles Borromeo
Curiosity
Although this donation is considerably posthumous to the time of the Saint, it offers Collegio della Guastalla the effigy of a bishop who assiduously attended it in his life.
Colour ranges
The garment in shades of grey and yellow stands in the middle of a dark background. Above the head, a brown/yellow area offers an idea of continuity and gives an upwards spiritual impulse to the Saint.
Analysis of light
Only the clothing is enlightened by a bright light, and a clever chiaroscuro effect shapes the creases and gives volume and preciousness. The strongest light strikes the central part of the dress, but it gradually fades towards the top of the picture.
Study of the composition
A symmetrical isosceles triangle encloses the entire figure, though it seems not to end in that figure, but to be pushed up by St. Charles’ gaze.
